NOTES ON THE RACING.

A JOCKEY SUSPENDED. TWO OTHERS CAUTIONED. " (By Telegraph.-Special Correspondent.) New Plymouth, February 14. It was a dull, overcast (lay for tho opening of the Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting, ami just before the last race a smart shower fell, which drove hundreds off the course. The attendance appeared to be up to the average, and the public were- rewarded by some iino racing.

The stewards met three times during the day. ' After the Hurdle Race Copestake, rider of Cornelian, was suspended for threa months for not riding his mount out. H. Gray, rider of Coromandel in the Cup, complained that Stockley, on Gloy, had interfered with him, and after hearing evidence a caution was administered. .1. Conquest was also cautioned for crossing in the Okato Hack Handicap.

Backers of favourites fared badly during the day, as only two first choices prevailed. There was a hostile demonstration against the judge at the conclusion of the last race, which was won by Royal Dragoon. Tho judge placed Galtee second, although Onin«e undoubtedly should have had her nuuihor hoisted in that position.

After tho withdrawal of Brilliancy, nighdon, and Bismarck. Allure was the selected of backers in the Hack Hurdles Handicap, but, with the exception, of Cornelian, a winner at Haworn, all the others were well supported. At the first fence Rhwi'nia, Allure, and Silver Cluse were on terms, but the last-named fell. Kawinia then led from Allure, with Cornelian tailed off. There was no alteration in the positions till the distance, when Silva headed Allure, but could not reach Rawinia, who won comfortably. Cornelian finished very fast, but both he and Allure were ridden with indifferent judgment.

Backers met a further reverse in the Stewards' Handicap, when a. good favourite—St. Bill—was beaten by Ashby, ono of the Auckland team. Miss Livonia, and Bowbells were the quickest to begin, hut St. Bill soon raced to the front, and he was out by himself when racing across the bottom of the course. Two furlongs from home Ashby came through fast o"n the fence, and, catching St. Bill a hundred yards off the post, won by a neck. Lucille came very fast at the finish. The winuer was formerly trained by F. Macnianeiniii, but met wr'th an accident, and was subsequently sold ont of the stable. The public were well suited in the Timaru Hack Race, when the first and second favourites paid dividends. To Waharoa, on the inside, was the quickest to begin, but, at tho end of a furlong, he was joined by Aloha, w.ith Watene and C'lemoes following. Across the bottom of the track Aloha shook off Te Waharoa, but C'lemoes joined h*r as they raced into the straight. In the run home Clemoof held the Porirun filly quite easily, and won by several lengths. Dover Straits was a length away.

Vrojectile, Ecd I.npin, nnd Fiiss, were withdrawn from the '"'up, leaving fourtecn runners. The field was hunched as the horses left the straight, and there was a :,'ood deal of bustling as they raced Piist liie jix-l'ttrlmißs post. Ifere the colours of .Patriotic, .lnrgoii, and rian'otion were mn-t conspicuous. Oloy moved up down the \pcM, and a little, later lie was just behind Plantation and Royal Arins. In the straight, Lady Mense.hiiioff came very fast, and, smothering evervthin? for pace, she ran in a comfor'able winner, fioyal Arms was second, just clear of Plantation. Then came Gloy, Jargon, Coromandcl, and Jlendip in that order.

Tiresome came from Auckland with the reputation of being able to gallop fast, and as the field in the was admittedly verv weak, the public made her a better favburitc than St. Petersburg. At the ut-u-t Te Koti led from Fuss and St. Petersburg, with Tiresome next. Tiresome ran up 'o Uic Waders as they swept, into the straight, but St. Petersburg came f-ist on the outside, and got up 111 time to' win by a length. Sandy Pajil was {/ailed off going down tbo back, but he came very fast in the straight, and got third place.

There were only six runuors in the (ikiilo Hack Handicap. The form of St. Petersburg in the Open Welter event indicated Manawukaha to be "the liest of good things," but disaster overtook him, and Master Tiipuhi led the. whole way, mid won easily. At the start, Rualangnta cannoned into the favourite, who received a bad bump, and was labt away. He failed to improve much, and another bum]!, received when going out of the straight, settled his chance?. Oliver voilp uini very h : u-d. and it nppp.-ired is if lie might got second pkce vkeu UlO

straight was reached, but Uio effort had boon too much,, and jlcrrio. Emerald .beat him in the run homo. '

Ashby was saddled up agaip in the Flyiiiß Handicap, in which there wore five runner--. 'Che Auckland horse was favourite, with • Gladiole next. Oliver had the latter out first, but f-he was steadied Roinp down the back, and St. .Toney took the lead. Ashby joined St. Toiiey at the straieht, and Gladiole also put in a r-laim. The If n vera horse,, however, held bis own, and won by n neck from Gl.idinle, with Ashby a length away. Miss Livonia was fourth, arid Mastci\ Sylvia next.

Ha vera form pointed to R-oyal Dragoon as the best of the Scurry field, and he won rather comfortably. '.The other placing? by the'judge did not coincide with the public estimate. ■
