Police Court to-day John M'Carthy was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on charges of. being drunk and disorderly and resisting the police. The evidence of tlio police was to tho effect that prisoner had an exceedingly bad record, having been convicted previously of various sorts of criminal acts. Only last week, in Wellington, M'Carthy was fined J£> and costs for using bad language, resisting the police, and damaging a uniform.' There have been upwards of a dozen convictions against him since 1902, the; first of which involved a f-entence of two months for cruelty to a horse. Other offences for which he was convicted wcro vagrancy, begging, and wilful damage. In 1908 ho served three months' imprisonment for bad language, and in 1910, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment for assault, causing bodily harm. 'He came prominently under notice a year or two ago for wilfully destroying his o\m eyesight by the use; of lime. Sergeant Wjllis said that the man was known from one end of Now Zealand to the other. Ho was a dangerous criminal, and wherever he went, he caused trouble:' He came in for a good ileal of misplaced sympathy on account of his affliction, but he "was actually a menace. Tho Court said that it was necessary to protect the prisoner from himself and sentenced him as stated.
The monthly meeting of tho Terrace Tiiid School Committee was held last night, Mr. J. A. Nash presiding. The headmaster, Mr. F. I'airbrother, reported the roll number 422, and the average attendance- to 370. The attendance had not boon at all satisfactory since the Christmas holidays, a large number of children not having yet returned to school. The rooms of Standards V nnd VI were overcrowded, and he ,made several recommendations as to enlarging the school and rearranging the staff. It was decided to send the report on f.o tho AVanganui Education Hoard. A letter was received from the Education Board to the effect that a fender had been accepted for improving tho exits at the school. Messrs. Zortt and Tregurtha. wove appointed a visiting committee for' the ensuing month. Mr. F. Sf.ockwell presided over a largelyuttemled meeting of the Motor Cycle Cliib last night, when arrangements were mado for: a reliability (rial on Easter Monday. Tt was resolved to hold e picnic at tnp Manawatu Gorge on • February 2h. A number,of new members were elected.
