WANGANUI JOTTINGS.
(By TdeirraDh-— Special Correspondent.! Wanganui, February 14. Owing to the continued disagreements between the local tellies concerned as to the ailocation of the cost of the Taylorville liver bank protection, tlie Wanganui Borough Council has decided to take immediate! steps to have a Koyal Commission set. up to deal with the nuittcv. The Borough Council has instructed its sol ; eitor lo tako outside opinion on the judgment of the Chief Justice in the recent action brought against the council Ijv the Gonville-Castlcelifi Tramway li'oard, with a view to lodging an appeal. Judgment was given for the board, the amount involved being- <KOO. Bush burns are in progress all over the inland districts, and to-day town and country alike are thickly enshrouded in For some time past strained relations have existed between the Wanganui Council and its engineer, and last evening the council lengthily discussed the matter consequent upon a mtoion by the Mavor that (he engineer be given three months' notice of the termination of ms engagement. It was f=ooll evident that the engineer's professional ability was not called in question, (he ground lor complaint resting upon what one councillor called the "incompatibility of temper" between the council and the engineer. The council split in two parties, of which one numbering four was disposed to settle the matter right away, iho remaining six, however, contended tJiat the corn-so proposed was a gross injustice to the engineer, and it was pointed out that he had not even been asked to oiler a defence. After no less than eight motions had been one by one rejected, tho moderate party carried a resolution that in view of the strained relations it bo leit to the engineer to endeavour to secure a more congenial po s > tion at tlle c^ possiblo date.
