Two or throe pipe culverts had lx-en put in on Hie Akatarawa Hoad; others had been repaired. The lotnra portions, although down for about .'lO years, appeared to be in a fairlv good state of preservation. Advantage had been taken of the low slate of the llutt liivcr to put in a coup oof stone crates just west of the Maori bank above Upper Ilutt to prevent limber erosion of the banks which, if not prevented, would endanger the road in the future. Councillor Howell and the inspector met two representatives nt the llorowhenua Citv Council ami their engineer at the Ngatiawa Bridge on .lanuarv 25 and suggested alterations m the adjustment of the cost lu be Ixirue by the. two bodies. The opinion hold by tho Horowhcnua representatives was strongly a"ainst paying more than one third ol tho total cost,' 'the Ilutt County Council to pav a like amount. On February 1 the chairman, Councillors Welch, Whilcimin, and Edwards, with an officer of the Public Health Department, paid a visit to tho Kpuni Hamlet and inspected tho drainage. The report of the City Solicitor and tho Public Health Officer was placed before the council, and was adopted. ~ Tne chairman presented a report on the new bridge over the Buamahanga Kiyer (Wairarapa). Councillor Welch staled that he was present at the opening of the bridge and considered the structure was everlasting. It was decided, after consideration of the report of the inspector of works, that threo river crates be put in at Maori Bank (above Upper Hutt), tho clerk to request that Messrs. Joseph and John Whitemau and the Windsor Tark Syndicate pay three-quarters of the cost, and the City Council a quarter. A deputation, consisting ot Messrs. J. Foster, Salter, and Stokes, waited on the council, asking that it should acquire Sections 51 and 52, Paekakanki, as a reserve for the public. It was resolved that a reply be sent to the deputation stating that the council was willing to acquire the sections for the use ot the public for all time (the land to Ik absolutely inalienable) and pay all costs ot transfer in connection therewith, ami requesting them to assist the council bygetting the consent of the owners to the A letter was received from the Public Works Department agreeing to a further sum of ,£250 (out of the .£laou vote) lying expended on the Waikauae end of the Hutt-Waikanae Road. It was decided to call for tenders for metalling tho Pliminerton-Pahautainii Road, to close at noon on February 23. A letter was received from the uoluon Bav Cement Company stating that it is prepared to promptly supply cement ol guaranteed quality. ... Dr. C. P. Knight wrote referring to the bad condition of Luff's Road. It was decided that he be not granted permission to erect the gate asked for. Ihe inspector's action in clearing Luff s KoaU was approved. _ A letter was received from Mr. K. B. Kov referring to straying stock at lait.i. It 'was decided that the ranger be given one month's notice of the cancellation of his appointment. ~ _. In response to a letter from the Wellington' Steam Ferry Company referring to drainage at Day's Hay. it was decided that the chairman should rait upon the manager (Mr. Zohrab). Another etter from the company, referred to the lighting of the water front ot Day s Bay. On the motion of Councillor Unwell it was ; decided that the chairman lie given au- : thoritv to enter into negotiations with ■ the company iu regard to the lighting ot the water-front. .. In respect to the proposed bridge across the Ilutt River on the Lpper HiittPahautanui Road it was decided that plans and an estimate of the cost of a r bridge and approaches to be constructed i in ferro-concrete be obtained from Mr. ' Laing-Meason as early as possible. i It was decided to leave the matter of • advertising for a ranger for one riding > (or more) of the Hutt County until next Accounts amounting to .£7BB 15s. -d. were passed for payment.
