Charters. M..A.) were present. There was otherwise a largo number of followers on foot and iu vehicles. OTAKI. Mr. George Powell, a well-known resident, passed away at his homo on .Monday morning, after an illness extending over several weeks. Deceased was a prominent member of the local Horticultural Society, lie leaves a wife and family to mourn their loss. SHANNON. The annual picnic of the Moutoa schoolchildren will taka place on February 'J3 on Dr. Wall's property. Mr. Gundy, of the post office staff, has been transferred to Christchurch. Mr. C. Dunckley will take .Mr. Gundy's position in the local post office. Last week a, deputation from the sports bodies in the district waited on the trustees of the recreation ground. It was decided that the trustees should allow the local athletic clubs to use the. eastern end of the reserve, and form a cycle track •if necessary. The deputation guaranteed, on behalf of the clubs, to complete the work before the year was out, a temporary dividing fence to be erected while work wax in progress. .Messrs. liall and Jones have donated three prizes for a thirty-milo cycle road race, to take place here after Kaster. Mr. Key, vice-president, occupied the chair at a meeting of the Mnnawahi Flux Employees' Union, on Saturday afternoon in the Druids' Hall, when cutting and trimming conditions were discussed, and delegates were chosen to meet the millers in conference.
