Brilliant weather Vavou ed tho inauguration of the fifteenth annual contest under the North Island Brass Bands' Association, which is taking place here. There was a very large and enthusiastic attendance at the Park racecourse this afternoon, where a reception and garden party was held. After traversing tho main streets, the visiting bands entrained to . the park, where the Mayor and the chairmen of various local bodies, including Mr. Hunter Brows, of AVairoa, welcomed the bands. Lieutenant-Colonel Pringlo, of AVanganui, on behalf of tho association, and Mr. E. It. B. Holben (secretary of the association) responded. Each band in turn then played one of its own. selections, and later the bands together, under tho baton of Lieutenant Herd, gave "Tho Conqueror" march. During the afternoon the visiting bauds were entertained by the ladies of tho district. '

Solo competitions in connection with the band contest were commenced at His Majesty's Theatre to-night. According to the visiting bandsmen the attendance constituted a record.
