"BLIND" LIGHTHOUSES.
A system of what mariners nre calling "blind" lighthouses is about to be established by the French Government. This revolution in niaritiiiM signalling consists in tho use of Hertzian waves, and it is believed that it will prove cf far mors lasting value than lights, since it is equally valid in foggy weather, when the usual lights cannot be seen. Indeed, some experts look forward to the gradual extinction of coast lights, ond expect that ships will soon get: (heir bearings from Ihe ticking of "wireless" receivers. Tho great difficulty to be overcome is .stated to l,e that of establishing direction, so as In enable a navigator to determine accurately from which particular station the message comes, but several English and Italian investigators liavp now, it is said, formulated a practicable scheme. In any case, Ihn French lighthouse authorities are, early next year, to make experimental trials at certain stations in tho Channel, and Trinity House has been promised special information as to the progress and results.
