SAFETY IN ANAESTHETICS.
* The Xew York correspondent of the "Standard," telegraphing r.t the end of December, said:—i> r. Gwathniay, an anaesthetist nt the. Skin and Cancer Hospital, has discovered n new method of adniinifrerin.T chloroform and ether, reducing the risk of death to nil, and eliminating tho after-nausea in 90 per cent, of the eases. The method, which has recently been used in C(K)O enws in n number of hospitals throughout the country, consists ill nassin? the anaesthetic through water warmed slightly above blood heat before admim'steriiis to tho patient. This is accomplished by a simple apparatus operated by a foot pump. The water removes certain impurities, mainly aldehyde, which tend to cause nausea, whilst the anaesthetic, beins of the temperature of the body when inhaled, dees not cause any shock to the system as produced by tho old method of breathing cold ether and chloroform. Dr. Gwathinay says that an infant of three days old can snfely be anaesthetised, while all patients can be made completely unconscious in five minutes without seriously affecting the kidneys, heart, or lungs.
