A CARNIVAL WEEK.

fr PROPOSAL BY COMPETITIONS SOCIETY. At last evening's meeting of the Ne# Zealand Competitions Society the secretary (Mr. ,1. Dykes) read a letter which, ho had forwardo<l to Mr. H. F. Allen, secretary of the Wellington Industrial Association and Shopkeepers' Association embodying a proposal to arrange a carnival week for Wellington during the, period allocated for the society's carnival of the present year. The letter ran: "Dear Sir,—l have been entrusted by my committee to approach your association in order to sec if it is willing to act in conjunction with the New Zealand Competitions Society in organising a carnival and industries week in Wellington, to be held during the season of our annual festival, which, commences (his year on October 10, nnd runs for about a fortnight, including Labour Day and the Wellington Racing Club's spring; meeting, In brief our idea is for shopkeepers and factories to run an industry weelt similar to tho one held here some time ago, tho other attractions being the competitions at the Town Hall, tho races at Trentltim and Oi» Labont- Day celebrations. 1 have no doubt that excursion rates could be arranged with the railways in the Wellington province, and possiblyreduced steamer rates might be possible. Our competitions bring to Wellington a largo number of competitors and their friends from all parts of the Dominion, 311111 in vie«• of the above-mentioned attractions, together with reduced rates for travel, 1 havo no hesitation in nsserting that there, would bo an influx of visitors to the city that would fax the accommodation to the utmost. Of the benefits your association and tho city generally would reap if the scheme could be. brought about, I need not enlarge upon, but you can see that they would ).-e considerable, and that the idea is worthy of the fullest and most careful consideration from your' ■ association. Trusting that with your co-operation yre may lie tho instruments of establishing in Wellington nn annual carnival week similar to those held in sister cities, nnd thus -eoivfer- a boon on tho city uud her citizens.—l have the honour to be, vours faithfully, James Dykes, Secretary.'
