NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Bi Glenjoe.l

The Taranaki Cup will Iμ run on Wednesday next. In connection with the Bannovirke Racing Club's meeting, which is to be held on March G and 7, owners are reminded that nominations for all events, except the Trial and Maiden, close at 9 o'clock to-night, with the secretary, Mr. Jas. Spiers Freeman. The telegraph oflico closes at 8 p.m. So fur, there aro not many of the progeny of Field Battery racing, but all of those that have .sported silk (Mem to lje able to gallop well, and it looks as if the services of the Hotchkiss horso will ho in demand with breeders in future seasons. Weights for minor events ou the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting are not <lue until Saturday next. Whon pulling up, after the finish of the More Mere Hack Handicap at Hawera, Crawford collided with Gordon Ball, and his rider, Goldfinch, was thrown to the ground, but fortunately escaped injury. Eangiatua, who hit himself while racing at Trentham, is now quite well again, and will be racing at Wanganui. So far, it has- not been decided whether tho black colt will contest the Juvenile or the Flying Handicap. Tho dual success of. Black Northern <it the Hgmont meeting makes tho sixth consecutive win score;! by the half-brother to Irish. In carrying 12st. Gib., and running twelve furlongs in 2min. -IGsec, Mr. H. M'Kenzie's horso 'proved himself a grado abovo ordinary form. Notwithstanding Brouzo's win in (he Egniont Cup, there were not a few who wero of. opinion that Mr. Morse would ask Counterfeit to concede the Field Battery filly 141b. at Wanganui. At the Eginnnt meeting the bold showing made by Itoyal Dragoon in the Waipapa Haek Flat caused him to be sent out favourite for the Scurry, but, after "being out in front, and having every chance to win, he failed to withstand a challenge from Tobias. Ths chestnut fiolt. who is a member of It. Eva's team nt Xew Plymouth, is hardly ready yet, but the two races which he had at Hawera will improve him considerably. Projectilo was very soro ft Bawera, and the Torpedo horse, who has dono a good deal of racing lately, may require to be spelled. Labour Day looked fresh end well at Hawera, though on the big side. Her condition will cnablo her trainer lo hustle her along on the tracks, and she will not be long in coming back h iwr best form. For many months past Starboard has lost all form, and a win for the Daystar Reldimj is long overdue. Prior to the Egmont meeting he ran a good half mile, which caused him to come in for some support in tho Jlawera Stakes, but 111 the race he failed to show up. A. Oliver, who rode Bronze to victory 111 the Kgmont Cup on Wednesday, won the same race on Milan two years ago. At the Taranaki meeting next week Meiidip will be ridden in Die Cup by A. Oliver instead of his usual pilot B. Hatch, who is unable to get down to Sst. -lib. The chfliigo of riders is not likely to brin" a change of luck as the St. Paul golding ran very badly in the Egmont Cnp, and could scarcely improve enough in tho intervening week to enable him to score. Several winners of the Egmont Cup have succeeded in the Wangamii Cup dttnug the same year, and this season bronze will have a chance to repeat tho performance. Veterinary Surgeon Eing, of Auckland, was present at the Egmont meeting this week, when, in addition to peldnig a couple of horsea, he put tho firing iron oa The Mystery, and treated Attention for kidney troubles. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club's meeting commences at Caulfield next Saturday when the Onkleigh Plate will be decided. Trainer G. Price returned to Palmerston North yesterday with the Egmont Cup winner, Bronze, and Blakeney. The latter lightened up a good deal'as the. result of his races at Hawera. hut Bronze, though she was galloped on, was no w-oree for her effort in tho Cup, and unless something unforeseen occurs, she should be rendy to play a prominent part in tho decision of tho Wanganui Cup at tho end of tho month. Mcrrivonia, who has not won a race for a long time, is rapidly coming down in the weights, and iu the Wanganui Cup, she has 71b. less than she won with last year. Jockey 11. Gray is going to the Dtinedin meeting to ride Bon Ton in the Champagne Stakes there, fro far the crack rider has not engaged to steer any other horses, but there is little doubt that his appearance at Wingatui will secure him much patronage from southern owners. Other North Island jockeys ongaged at the meeting are: K. Hatch, 11. Telford, and T. Pritchard. A two-year-old half-brother to Golden Eagle and Nicotine wa.s sold at Hawera on Thursday for Xi.'.gns. The purchaser was .}lr. J). Harry, who formerly raced Nicotine. The last-named was "by St. Clements and, like Golden Eagle, liiul the reputation of being unreliable, but the two-year-old is by Sylvia Park, none of whoso progeny were ever regarded as quitters. It will be interesting to' note how Imagination will fare iu the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui, as Mr. W. E. Bidwill's record in this race is surely a fine 011b— two starts and two wins. 'His successes were gained by Provocation and Gravitation, both of which horses were ridden by I!. Hatch. The latter has also ii unique record in connection willi this ran 1 , having had five rides in it. anil imiiK thrice triumphant. The third rid? \va- tin Armlet", who scored a narrow viclorv over Form by in li) 10.
