SWIMMING.
MESSEN CUP. At the Te Aro Baths last evening the committee of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club got off the second distance (440 yards) of the Messen Cup contest. The race provided a very close finish, E. Vango winning by a touch. The result was as follows:—!;. Vango (lolsec.), 1; A. Crowthcr (.'Msec), 2; K. D. liussell (S9see.), 3- Also started: E. Donovan (156 sec), W. G. Morpeth (SGsec), P. Grey (47sec), B. J. O'Xeill (25sec), S. Murrell (l'sec.), and R. Healy (scr.). W. G- Morpeth was disqualified for having started before his time. . DOMINION RECORD BROKEN. , No fewer thau OS competitors having entered for the 50 yards open handicap ou the programme of the Old Boys' Swimming Club's carnival (which is to be held at To Aro Baths on Saturday next), it was decided to run off the heats last evening. In ono hent "Tod" Solomons, the Sydney swimmer, covered thedistance in 25 2-5 sec, breaking the New Zealand record by over two seconds. In Sydney last year .Solomons did the distance in 24 l-ssec. The heats resulted as follow:—First hent: "Tod" Solomons (scr.), 1; E. Levy (asec), 2. Time,'2s 2-ssec. Second heat: A. A. Somerville (13sec), 1; A- H. Wine (Usee), 2. Time, 37scc. Third heat: A. Smith (3sec), 1; W. Abel (Gsec), 2. Time, 29sec Fourth heat: 1.. Salek (3scc.), 1; A. G. Anton (Ssec), 2. Fifth beat: F. Coira, (Ssec), 1; H. M. Mullins (fisec), 2. Time, 33 Msec. Sixth heat: J. Gosling (Usee), 1; T. Woodcock (Usee), 2. Time, 33 4-5 sec. Seventh heat: T. H. King, 1; T. King, 2. All the competitors named are entitled to swim in the final on Saturday. WELLINGTON CENTRE. A special general meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening to discuss three notices of motion by Mr. G. S. Hill. Mr. J. F. Atkins presided. Mr. Hill's motion dealt witti questions concerning the election of the executive committee, and also a resolution in regard to general meetings' of the centre being held every four weeks. After discussion, all three motions were rejected.
