WHAT IS A PIMP?
Sir,—l notice that the tramway men accuse ex-Inspector Fuller of being a "pimp." Tho word occurs continually. Mav I ask whether Mr. Semplo or some other extort in the offensive will define it? I have consulted several dictionaries and can find no authority for any meaning except that of "procurer," which docs not seem exactly what is meant. T don't think it would be fair to repeatedly accuse a man of bigamy, and then say you oulv meant he was a jack-in-office, and similarly, if vou mean a man is a spy, and don't like to say so, because that is necessarily a part of an inspector s duty, it doesn't get you.any further to call him a "pimp."—l am, etc., PLAIN PETER. SAVOIR VIVRE. Sir.—Vou lav great store by a letter signed "Tit for Tat," which, to the standard of some, will appear quite a cdpc of niKp'aced coufidcuce. A\ lieu time nt-ars off the rough edges of the strike, (ho outstanding fact remaining will be, that the tramway men's amcur propre was hurt and the City Council, out of sheer ignorance of "-avoir vivre," failed to make tho "amende honourable" until its ucecssarinoss • was rammed down their threats. The tramway men have not lost kudos with the public. They were not responsible- for any of the asperities of tho occasion. Their demeanour was exemplary. To anyone not biased, their slowness' to go out. muteness when out, i'tid spirited xral when returning, appeal for criLMdcralion. The goad-humoured submission of the public speaks sufficiently for its appraisement of the incident, which was clearly in tho direction of raiMiig tho dignity of the service, while tint of the council was just as dearly in the other direction. In plain English, if the council had not been nredoininau-tly comm-iscd of "jumped-iips," the incident would never have hanpeiied. it '"lit fir Tat" moot a committee for the ourposa of mending the manners of public men he mav count on reasonable assistance, but hi--, proposition as at present propounded =i,clls failure foredoomed.—l am, etc., HENRY DODLEVT.
