ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
o ~ SAD AFFAIR ON R.M.S. ROTORUA, The City Coroner (Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) held an inquest at the hospital yestorday afternoon touching the death of ,J. G. Templeton, a young man, who inflicted a fatal wound on himself on R.M.S. Rotorua on Tuesday evening. Senior-Sergeant Mathieson, of Wellington South, represented the police. From the evidence, it appeared that deceased was 23 years of age, and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Templeton, of Southland. In April last he visited tho Old Country with his parents, tho voyage being undertaken on account of the ?on J s health. While in Edinburgh deceased consulted Drs. Easson and Miles, who decided that an operation was necessary. Subsequently tho surgeon expressed tho opinion tha't tho patient would recover his health. T-ho voyage out to New Zealand was commenced on December 21, the deceased being just able to walk. On tho voyage hs was attemicd by Dr. Pcarman. a passenger, and by Dr. R. C. Roberts, ship's surgeon. For a time his health improved, but after that ho gradually declined. On Monday evening he attempted to throw himself overboard, but was prevented by his father and mother. On Tuesday evening his father heard a noise, ftoni liis bed, and ou lifting the blanket saw what had happened. The ship's surgeon and Dr. Guthrie were called, and the unfortunate young man was removed to the. hospital, where ho died shortly after admission. A verdict was returned in accordance with tho evidence.
