MISS ETHEL IRVING.
ARRIVES IN WELLINGTON. Miss Ethel Irving (Mrs. Gilbert Porteous), the brilliant English comedienne, Mr. Portcous, and the members of her comedy company arrived from Sydney by the Ulimaroa yesterday, en route to Auckland, where the Now Zealand tour begins this evening. Hiss Irving, who occupies an enviable position at the top of her profession, stated (hat the party had enjoyed their stay in Australia immensely, and were delighted (o find such warm-hearted appreciation of the performances they had given there. Those included A. Ei AY. Mason's play "The Witness for the Defence," Somerset Maughan's comedy "Lady Frederick," ami Henry Bataillo's play "Dame Nature." Of these the first-named two were to be produced in New Zealand—in the four centres only. The New Zealand tour had all beon arranged within a few days towards the end of their second season in Sydney, and though it seemed impossible at first, here they were, prepared to do or die. The. company includes Alisses Marjory Swallow, Violet Ley, Dorothy Fraser, Ruby Davies, Gwcn Burroughs, Florence Nelson, Cccile Bradley, and Ilylda Ferron, Messrs. Stephen Ewart, J. Plumpton AVilson, Halliwcll Hobbcs, Townsend Whitling, Warburton Gamble, Charles Wallis, Herbert Shaw, Richard Kean, Gilbert Portcous, Harry E. Taylor, Sydney Bucklaml. and Monte Luke. They left for Auckland by the Main Trunk express yesterday morning.
