Mr. Millar, who sppii.ks enthusiastically of the fishing, especially, ill Taiipo, declined to make any statement in regard to the political situation beyond repeating his denial of the rumour Unit he intended to retire from public life and to accept a position in Australia. He will leave for Wellington on Friday evening. The funeral of I lie late Dr. J. 0. Closs, of Dunedin, look place at Vontherston on W.edncsday, and was largely attended. The service was conducted by the. R-ov. G. 11. Slowell. Colonel John Stanley, R.A.A., Commandant of (;ht> Victorian Forces, arrived in Wellington liv the Arahura from Gn-ymoutli last night. Mr. Arcliiliald Howie, jun., lias been appointed by the New South Wales Government, on the recommendation of the I Public Service Hoard, as Director of Public Building Works, wilh a salary of .£IOOO a year, and will take up his duties in the position from March 1 next. Mr. Howie has been manager of the firm of Howie Bros., contractors, for the past ten years. Mr. Albert Golilie, late of the literary stuff of the Sydney "Sun,"' and Mrs. Goldie (nee Miss Dulcie Deamer), arrived from Sydney by the UHmaroa yesterday, on a visit to Mrs. GoUlie's parents, Dr. and Sirs. Deamer, of Featherston. They return to Sydney by Friday's' steamer, en route for New York. Mr. George Nathan, of Wellington, who has been to Sydney in connection with the film supply for the new Adelphi Theatre, Willis Street (which is to be ready by Easier), returned by (he Ulimn l'oa yesterday. , Mr. Nathan states that it lias been decided to show pictures of an evening only for a start. Future operations will bo governed by circumstances. Mr. C. S. Nixon, Collector of Customs at Wellington, who has been, indisposed for some months past, has improved in health considerably, and has arranged to resume duty on Saturday next. Mr. 13. 11. Brabazon, who has been ActingCollector here, will resume duty as Collector at Napier. Mr. W. G. Kiddell, S.M., who had been on holiday leave for some time, resumed duly at the Court yesterday morning. Sir. A. Crooke, S.M., who has been relieving at Wellington, left for New Plymouth yesterday morning, and from today will temporarily tako up the magisterial duties formerly carried out by Mr. fitzhorbert, who died this week. Mr. Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, left for Kotorua by yesterday's express on holiday leave. Lieutenant G. W. Brnddell, New Zealand Staff Corps, has been appointed to the Second Battalion, Ninth Regiment (Wellington East Coast Hillw). Mr. Leo. Bouisson has been selected from thirty applicants to be town clerk to tho borough of Newmarket. Mr. Green, formerly of the Hawkesbury College, Sydney, who has Ixhmi appointed instructor in agriculture to the Otago University, was a passenger from Sydney by the lilimaroa yesterday. Just prior to leaving Sydney, Archbishop Wright, who was a passenger from that port by the Ulimaroa yesterday, received a cable message informing him that the Rev. Albert E. Talbot, M.A., had accepted the deanery of Sydney, which had been offered him. Tho newdean is said to Iμ a ripo scholar, and one who has had a valuable experience as a parochial clergyman. He was a scholar of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and attained two first cla-sses in the examination for degrees, being placed in the first class in successive years in both part one and part two of the theological tripos, lie also won the following important Fuiversity prises and scholarships during his academical career, viz., the Cams prize/ the Jeremie Septuagint prize, the Tyrowhitt Hebrew scholarship, and tho Mason Biblical Hebrew prize. Jfe is at present rector of the important and thicklypopulated parish of Stowcll Memorial, Satford, in the diocese of Manchester. Archbishop Wright, of Sydney, and Mrs. Wright, arrived hero by tho Ulimnroa yesterday. They are to tour the Cold Lakes district ot the sonth immediately, and later on are to visit AVairakei and Rotorua. Mr. S. George Nathan returned yesterday by the s.s. Uliniaroa from Sydney. Dr. A. Garland, of Oamaru, leaves for London by the New Zealand Shipping C'o.'s R.M.S. Ruapehu to-day. The Rev. W. Johnston, of Kaikoura, is going Home by the Ruapehu, which leaves Wellington for London to-day, onahoalthrecruitiiig tour. The lion. R. B. Roes, M.L.C. for NorlhWestcrn District, Victoria, is a. passenger to Jlonte ideo by the Ruapehu to-day. Mr. Green, who has been appointed special instructor in agriculture to tho Otago University, arrived from Sydney by the Uliniaroa yesterday morning. Mr. Green was formerly at Hawkesbury College, Sydney. Dr. AV. X. Robinson, who is connected with tho colonial meat trade in London, is proceeding Home by the Ruapehu. Sir. Phillips, S.M., Goulburn, N.S.W., anived by the Uliniaroa yesterday, ami proposes to take a trip through New Zealand. Dr. R. Richter, of Vienna, and Mr. 0. Anz, of Chefoo, who have been touring in Australasia, leave Wellington for Monte Video by the Ruapehu to-day. Miss Adelaide Bruce, a well-known Australian vocalist, anived from Sydney by the Uliniaroa yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Sergei and family, of Eltham, leave Wellington by tho Ruapchu for London to-day. Sir. and Sirs. F. H. Baiker, Timaru, are passengers for London by R.M.S. Ruapehu, which sails to-day. Major Andrew, of the llith Slahrattas, who recently returned to India niter spending hi& furlough in Christchurch, has fallen upon high honours since rejoining his regiment (states a Christchurch Press Association message), lie, wilh the 111 th Mahrattas, took part in the Durbar celebrations, and Major Andrew was selected us one of the few British oflicers in native regiments to receive the Durbar medal, throe only being allotted to each regiment. He' has now been selected as one of seven officers fiom the whole of the Indian army to proceed on political missions in different districts. Major Andrew will act as special niisMoner in Uie Bombay presidency, where his knowledge of the Jlahratla language and dinlecU will stand him in pood stead. Sir. and Mrs. R. E. Bannister arrived from Sydney by the Uliniaroa yesterday. Mr. Robert J. Durance, Australasian representative of the Ford Motor Company, for which the Colonial Motor Company are the New Zealand agents, is in Wellington on his annual tour through Now Zealand. Ho leaves for the norlh on Friday.
