NEW VOUCHERS. WORKING MEN'S CLUB CASE, GREEN'S SECOND TRIAL. 'J'ho criminal sessions of the Supremo Court were resumed yesterday, before Sir. Jii.-tico Chapman. ' .Mr. U.'ir. Ostler, of the- Crown Law Ollice, represented llu« Crown. Frederick William Green, hi whose case the. jury failed to agree on Monday, was placed in (ho dock to stand his second trial on a charge of theft of .£17.5 lfls. 9d. from the funds of the Working Men's Club. Green was appointed secretary and manager of the club in July, 1908, and occupied that position until October Inst, when he .was appointed secretary and librarian. On November 20 last ho tendered his resignation. The offence was alleged to have been committed between July 1, 1011, and November 20, Kill. Mr. A. L. Ilerdman appeared for Green, who again pleaded not guilty. Before the jury were called. Mr. Hcnlman suggested that those jurors who had sat on the fir=t trial should be exchidecl. His Honour thought that Mr. Ostler should have no objection to "st'iiulm;; aside" all those who served at the lirst trial, and this course was adopted. The panel was then •jxhauslorl, villi only eleven jurors selected. For the second ballot, the Registrar excluded the names of those already chojon, (Inse who had served at the first trial, o'i-.l Ilioso who had been challenged by Mr. Herdni.in. The evidence adduced by the Crown was on the same lines as at tho previous trial.
For the defence, Green >a;;niii gavo eviilence on his own behalf. Since the first trial he had discovered (and now produced) vouchers for accounts paid out of cash and not since balanced by cheque. These vouchers reduced the deficiency by about £20, and the accused remembered a further cash payment of Kimcthiiig like jEIO, for prizes for a billiard tournament.
li-efrjnald Francis Green, a clerk by occupation, and a brother of the accused, was also called. He stated that ho was in the Working lien's Club on the night after his brother left. He did not know that his brother had resigned, and bad called to see liiin. Ho noticed then that the floor of the office- was covered with papers.
After counsel on botb sides lind addressed the jury, Ins Honour deferred summing up until 10 o'clock this morning, to whicli hour the Court was adjourned.
