CARTERTON. The Rev. Father Kowe is at present attending retreat at St. Patrick's College, Wellington. Tho Kuapelvn, which sails from Wellington on Thursday, takes the following shipments of cheese from the Wairarapa: —Dalefield factory, 450 cases; Belvedere, 228; l'arkvale, 221; Taratahi, Uo; Carrington, 89; Longbush, 30; making a total of 1163 cases of an approximate value of .(.TOO. A return tennis match between the Tarama and Martiuborough Clubs is being arranged. It will bo played at Carterton on Saturday week. Mr. B. Keeper, the well-known horsetrainer, of Blenheim, intends to take up residence in Cartertou. It is reported, that crops of maize in the Carterton district have been somewhat seriously affected by frost during the past few days. The United Friendly Societies of Carterton have challenged the Jfasterton Friendly Societies to a game of cricket at a date to be arranged. Messrs. W. W. Mansfield, F. Stempa, arid W. Moore have each presented a seat to tho Carrington Park. GREYTOWN. The Greytown Borough Council met on Monday evening when the following business came up:—The ck-rk reported having written to a local firm re plying for hire without a passenger license, and informing them Unit a license must l>o taken out forthwith. Correspondence— From the local Foresters' Court, complaining of having to pay a license for their hall; received. l-'roin K. Ward 'fate, asking permission to divert a water-race; referred to Works Committee. From Hadley Bros., offering to supply cement at Wellington at o=. id. per bag; decided to procure some. From Municipal Corporation Association in reference to a test caso; received. From Paymaster-General, enclosing ,£ls 10s. for gas-fittings in post office, also .£250 for public baths. The sanitary inspector reported satisfactorily, and the Gas Committee also tabled a satisfactory report, mentioning that new consumers were b?ing connected. M.e=sr.-. Veitch and Allan were permitted (o deviate a watorrace. It was decided to repair Kempton Koad. The balance-sheet was received from the auditor, and some "tags" were accepted, and tho document ordered to be. printed. The of auditing va* ■SlO. The strip of laud bought some years ago, and on which 5 per cent, interest has been paid ever since, is now to be paid for, as the auditor objects to a continuance of the present .-ystem. OTAKI. The monthly meeting of the Otuki Uoad Board was lisld on Mouday al'lcrnooii, wh"n correspondence was read from the Railway Department relating to certain drainage, and stating that the matter would receive attention. A claim for damage to eggs amounting to .£3 (Is. 10.U1., was made by Herbert Bright, some 60 dozen eggs having been brok-Eii, it was alleged, through the negligence of the board's roadmen. It was decided to obtain the evidence of the latter before taking action. A petition from Manakau residents, asking for improvements to Te Taka Road, was referred to the roadman for report. The monthly meeting of th« Slate School Committee was held on Monday evening, when the board's action in accepting Mis.s Splvoy's resignation without informing the committee was adversely criticised. The committee, were not tiware of the teacher's retirement until she had practically left the district. It: was decided to write to the board, pointing out that their action was not in the interest of school work generally, and that the resignation had caused ;i dislocation of work. The committer hail also been under the impression that Miss Sclvcy's appointment iras a pcrinanont one. 'it was decided to forgo this year's picnic.
