STATEMENT BY ACTING-MAYOR, Interviewed yesterday afternoon, tho Acting-Mayor (Mr. J. Smith) said that lie was pleased at the happy outcome of an unfortunate deadlock. He considered that, taking all the circumstances into account* tho settlement was eminently satisfactory, and would 1» approved I)V citizens. Councillors had gone through .a very trying time, but wero now glnil that tho dispute had l»en settled, and bygones would-bo bygones.
Other councillors approached spoko in a similar strain. Most of them have sacrificed a good deal dining the strike, constant attendance at meetings Involving a serious neglect of their private affairs.
