Li the last years of his life Louis became, a prey to the terror of death, and it is in the crii«lty and suspicion of his last years that the dramatist has chosen to portray him. His cruelty was shown by the life-long imprisonment of an unfaithful Minister in an iron cage, his superstition by thq image of the Saints, which he carried in his cap, and whoso forgiveness for the crimes he had committed he was in tho habit of invoicing. Louis XI was contemporary .with Henry VI, Edward IV, and Richard 111 in England, and he fignrcs as a, character in the Third Part of Shakespeare's "King Henry VI."
