The absence ot tramcars did not affect tho attendance of the public at the I Tlmr'nd-on Amateur Swimming Club's annual gala, which was held at tho Thorndon Baths on Saturday afternoon. A full tide and fine warm weather favoured tho competitors. The two essentials—a string band and afternoon tea—which go to make an outing of this kind a success, we.ro provided for. Taken on the'whole, the swimming was only fair in the senior events, much better exhibitions having been seen at local club carnivals. The juniors, bowever, showed a decided improvement of form over last year's performances. . . The big event—the -140 yards Welling'toii Championship—drew four starters, two of whom have recently come up fruiii the junior ranks. Th«o were R. A. Newton (Thorndon) and A. Crowther (Wellington Club). Both showed good form, and, with training, nioro should be heard of tiem. As was generally expected, Healy proved the winner, with Mnrrcll (Wellington Club) a good second. The most interesting race, next' to the championship, was the 100 yards President's Handicap. The interest was owing to tho fact that Brico, tho present holder of New Zealand short-distance honours, was compEting. He gained third place in the race, his time being 03 2-ssec. In addition to several uthcr swimming events), there was air exhibition of lifesaving by members of the Royal LifeSaving Society, a greasy lxwm event, and diving ccmpetiiiions.
