THE NEW IMPROVEMENT SCHEME. (By TeleEraph.-Snccla: Correspondent.! Wanganui, February 3. At the meeting of the Harbour Board last evening, the pilot reported that the bar still maintained a depth of 2.oft, with a great improvement in the approach to and berthage at the Castlecliff wharf. The engineer tabled u plan showing recent soundings outwards from tlio moles. The depths i varied Trom 24i't. opposite end of the moles to 21ft. on the bar 600 feet out, then gradually deepening to 27ft. IGOOft out from the moles. It is proposed to carry future mole extensions well beyond the latter distance. The board had a lengthy discussion on a motion to engage the services of another engineer, with the object of discovering whether Mr. Holmes or Mr. Reynolds is right in his estimate of the cost of future work, Mr. Holmes's figures having -greatly exceeded Mr. Reynolds's. The majority of the members pinned their faith to Mr. Reynolds, aud the motion was lost by six votes to four.
