Considerable annoyance is expressed by Mr. Montgomery, of the New Zealand Government Agency in Sydney, at the uso that has been made of his agency as an intermediary for matrimonial correspondence. Someone inserted an advertisement in a Sydney newspaper, without the knowledge of the agency, stating that he "desired to make,, the acquaintance of a young lady fond of gaiety," and directed the addressing of the correspondence care of the New. Zealand Government Agency. As a result, a large number of letters arrived, and were handed over, and no significance was attached to the matter until, inadvertently, one of the letters was opened, and the_ character of the correspondence ascertained. Tho matter was then placed in the hands of the police, who succccded in tracing the gay Lothario to a country town. His explanation:; proving satisfactory, no further action is intended. Sir William White, designer of thesteamship Mauretania, received the John Filch medal lately "for notable achievement as a naval architect." This medal which is awarded for "a great achievement in the applied sciences," has been pre-sented to six other men—Lord Kelvin, George Weslinghouse, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Alva. Edison, Charles T, rortcr, and Alfred Nohla.
