(From Our Special Correspondent.) OTAKI. Tlir montlily sitting of the S.M.' Court was held yesterday, Mr. Thomson, S.M., presiding. *A first offender was fined 20s. and cosw, and a prohibition order was issued against a local resident, the application being made by his parents. Tho Fresh I'ond ami Ice Company proceeded against Charles Nccs, alleging that ho failed to fulfil a contract relative to tho supply of milk, and claiming X 22. Plaintiff was non-suited. A similar action was also heard against Lewin and Nicholson, but claimants were non-suited. As plaintiff's solicitor made an announcement tliat he would probably appeal, a similar action, against W. Kirkley, was adjourned. FEILDING. Mr. Jolin Morrison, of Tokonmgi, a member of tho Oroua County Council, brought into town yesterday some specimens picked at random from a l&aoro patch' ol' rapo on his farm. l'he_ specimens aro over five foet long, and it may be said with safety the crop is one of tlie best ever known in the district. Ho also has a field of turniiw which is equally as good as the rape. Most of tho fat lambs have now teen sent away from this district. The season has been a splendid ono for grass, f\iul tho lambs fattened very satisfactorily, I'rices received have not, of course, been as high as the lamb-raisers desire or expected, and some of thorn shipped direct to London. FEATHERSTON. The bowling match held here on Thursday between Greytown and Fcathorston resulted as follows:—Greytown: Day, Hurray, Trotman, Brunton (s.), u6; l'oatherston: Baker, Henderson, 'locker, liverton (s-), 12. T , CVrevtown: Haigh, Manning, Loa-sby, Webster (s.), 21; Featherston: Holms, Donald, Horsbrugh, Benton (s.), 15. Greytown: Nix, Heos, Bockett, Wigg (s.), 23; Featherston: W. J. Nix, Serensen, G. Yule, Elliott (s.), 20. The visitors wero entertained by the home club during tho afternoon. CARTERTON. A competition was held by the Carterton Gun Club on Thursday afternoon for the patron's trophy. Mr. A. Teal (10yds.) proved the winner with 19 breaks. Messrs. B. Rcid (10yds.) and J. Laurenson (lGyds.) tied with IS birds each. A live pigeon match under the auspices of tho club takes place on February 22. A ten-acro field of oats, grown by Mr. Jan. Udy, at the Black Bridge, has yielded 751 bushels to the acre, and fifteen tons of straw. A euchre tourney in aid of the flower stall at tho forthcoming bazaar of the tire brigade was held on Thursday evening, and went off very pleasantly. Miss S. Whyto won the first prize for ladies, and Mr. E. Wilkins the men's prize. Tho evening concluded with a dance, to music supplied by Mr. H. Woodley. Miss D. Jackson is at present acting as relieving teacher at the Gladstone School. Mrs. Preddy, wife of Mr. F. W. Preddy, of Invercargill, and well-known in this district, died on Thursday after a Bhort illness. SHANNON. A good artesian flow has been obtained at Whitaunui at 121 ft. On Mr. Piggott's property a good flow was reached at a little over 100 ft. At a meeting of tho Library Committee on Thursday afternoon, a letter was read from the Lands Department, advising .. that the Mechanics' Institute section could be vested in tho Horowhenua County Council after compliance had been made with certain statutes. A sub-committee, comprised of Messrs. T. Lind, F. W. Venn,, and T. Hensman, was appointed to make arrangements for bringing the building into immediate use by the expenditure of a small sum of money. Mr. T.' Lind prosided at tho meeting, 'and there wero present: Messrs. Vonn, Gunning, Judd, Hesinan, Fargher, Murdoch; Selby, and tho Rev. Mr. l'almeh ■>"'< Mr. Piggott, who is a nativo of Newcastle, contemplates a visit to the Old Country. . . On tho .bowling green on Wednesday afternoon, in a - match for the Stansell Feathers, Messrs. Mitchell and Quarric, tho holders, wero defeated by Messrs. Callaghan and Itoos. The tennis courts were busy throughout the afternoon with the singles handicap for ladies for a trophy presented by Sirs. Laurvig. Mrs. Doidgo was tho successful contestant. The results of games were as follow:—Miss Smith beat Miss Ivnowles and Miss Linsell, and was beaten bv Mrs. Doidge. Miss Laurvig won from Mrs. Dupree and Miss Duncklcy, and was beaten by Mrs. Doidge in tho final. Miss ' Hager defeated Miss Olsen, Sirs. Doidge beat Miss Shaw, Miss Smith, and Miss Laurvig, Mesdames Gardiner and Fargher provided afternoon tea. The Green Flax-dressing Company have purchased 22J acres of land at lloutoa. ' Tho price paid for 19 acres was .£4O per acre, and for 33 acres ,£lB per acre. Through refusing to purchase the 3/-acro bock at tho price paid for tho 10' acres block, which option was open to the buyer, the purchaser had to pay over .C3O more for tho same land. Tho weather is warm and fine.
