BERTRAND STEWART'S EVIDENCE,

Extraordinary interest is being manifested in the trial of Bertrand Stewart, with attempted espionage at Bremen and other places. The President of .the Court subjected Stewart to a singular examination regarding his friends and means, suggesting that'he was a wealthj aristocrat. Stewart denied that ho was a member of the "Upper Ten Thousand," though he is a nephew of Lady Kensington;'his income is ,£2OOO a year. When at Oxford he belonged to the volunteers, and he served*in South Africa, where he aofc* cd as a cavalry scout and not as a spy. He did not ask his military superiors for leave to visit Germany. I The prosecution alleges _ that Stewart inspected the battleships building on the Weser and' at Hamburg, and obtained I the exact details of one of them. Four dockyard - servants ' wcro afterwards arrested.
. It is.further alleged that compromising letters from highly-placed British officers were found in Stewart's luggage.
POLICE INSPECTOR SENTENCED. Berlin, February 1. An ex-inspector of police named Reich has been sentenced to eighteen months at Essen for espionage. Max Schultz, a British subject, who was recently sentenced to seven years' imprisonment on charges of espionage, was among the witnesses.
