quaint scene at the opera HOUSE. \ "Here you are for Newtown!" "This way for Thorndon!" "AH the way to . Lsland Ray!" These wero a few of tho ' cries which greeted the ears of patrons of the Opera Hou?o as tliey gained the , street after witnessing the wholesale I slaughter of Hamlet and his royal rela- . tives last oveuing. Tho scene was . strongly reminiscent of the old days, when the buses used to compete with tho horse-drawn tramcars, and the public had a choice of several varieties of vehicles in which to reach their homes. I.ast evening there were Several largo drags, anil a number of seated expresses —in all between 20 and 30 vehicles—the drivers of which were tho reverse of shy in touting for patronage. Sixpenny fares were charged passengers for Newtown and Thorndon. Still, nothing loth, ladies in evening dress and their escorts stowed themselves away laughingly in the drags and expresses, glad to have the opportunity of avoiding tho walk home.
