Tlie commentators dis.igreo as to whether the "meat" referred to was vegetable or animal. Some sa.v that tho "locusts" were the pods of the enroll or locust (too, known as "St. John's Irmid"; others that they woro undoubtedly the insects, which form a common food 111 the East. It appcara that St. Jolm was within his rights in either case, as both articles woro lawful food to the Joivs, tho flying locusts boing specially mentioned in Loviticus xi. 22.
