Reception at the Pioneer Club. Very pleasant indeed was Ihe reception which was -given for Mrs. Irving ye.te - dav afternoon by the mongers of Iho Pioneer Club. Undaunted by the possibility of having to walk home nt tho close of the afternoon, several mcmoeis, living at a distance, were present, addition to those in the city itself, ami much pleasure was given b.v the opportunity of meeting Jlrs. Irving, and in listening to the singing of Mrs. Uice.stei and Miss Dnll. Great liowls of hydvan"eas and quantities of shaded sweet peas decorated the. large room, and, in the '•strangers' room," where tea, cofteo, and ices were solved, sweet peas were everywhere to be soen. . Mrs Irving, who was received b.v the president of Ihe club. -Miss' liichmoiul, was wearing a graceful frock ol violet silk veiled with black ninon, a blackscarf, ami a large black hat wreathed with violets. Miss Uiehmond was in a Islflck coat nnd skirt, and black hat with white plumes. Lady Ward, who was also among those present, were a fuschia-coloiiral frock of eeriso silk, covered with coronation blue ninon, the wide revers on the bodice bordering the yoke of cream tucked net being of silk of the .same shadp of blue. Her large black hat was massed with sweet peas of the same sluuie as her gown. Hiss Kane was in a striped black and white costume and large black plumed hat.
Mr. and Mrs. Tennant and Mi<s Zohrab wero passengers for Wellington by the Manuka from Sydney yesterday on their return from a visit to England. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Carter arrivedin Wellington from London yesterday. Miss Coates has returned from a visit to Auckland and Hotorua. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Smith (Duncdin) are visitors to Wellington. Mrs Francis Stevens and Miss Stevens, who have been visiting Otaki and Hastings, have returned to Oriental Bay. ■ : Tho marriage of Miss Kitty Macdonald, "GlenaUidale," Mangamahu, to Mr. Arthur Collins, also of Mangnmahu, takes place shortly. Invitations have been issued for the marriage of Miss Octavia Ileatcm and Mr. Arthur Evcrs-Swindell at St. James's Church, Hutt, on Saturday, February 17. A reception will bo given after the ceremony by Mrs. Heaton at her residence, "Bridgeside." Mr. and Mrs. Roger Lncena (Hawera) have gone on a visit to Picton. Mrs. Francis has returned from a visit to Picton, and Miss K. M. Francis arrived from Sydney by the Manuka yesterday. The Star Boating Club swimming sports are being held on Saturday afternoon. Miss Q. Hall is away on a visit to Mrs. L. Meredith, Whareama. • -Miss Campbell lias returned to Wellington from a visit ,to Cliristchurcli. 'Mrs. Collins (Queensland) is over on a visit to New Zealand, and leaves Wellington shortly for the south. Mr. and Mrs. W. Hathbone, of Waipawa, Miss Muriel Hathbone (Hutt), and Miss .Ida White, of Porangahau, are leaving shortly on a visit to Japan. Mrs. Milne (Mastcrton) left yesterday on a visit to Hasting?, and is" stnying with her sister Mrs. F. Cameron. Mrs. Henry Wood, who has been visiting her mother Mrs. St. George, in Masterton, returned to Napier on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Lowry (Hastings) are visiting Christcinirch.
Mrs. and Miss Rutherford left Xapier on Tuesday by the Mokoia for Auckland, from which port they embark by the P. and 0. steamer for the Old Country. While in London Mrs. Rutherford, who has been secretary of the Hawke's Bay brunch Gf the Victoria League for some time and has always taken a lively interest in its work, will call upon the head office and give them an idea of the work the league is doing in Hawke's liny.
