The contention is that the country club's are losing a great many horses which might be competing'attheir'meetirigs: if the restrictions .of tins-rule were lemoved. It h held/that these horses would be a great help to these me'ctiii??, and'that' they should not be allowed to drift to the unregistered rni.ks, qs, in many cases; they subsequently develop staying powers at the esponse of brilliancy.
Thoro will bo racing at Gisborno and Riccarron th« afternoon; At the former meeting the Grand National winner, Continuance, will bo seen under.-silk. Tho held opposed to him is not by any means a strong one. At Riccarton some good horses will be competing, but, generally, the class will not be comparable with what is seen on the same course in .November. •■. •.-.• ■

The defecfion of Valido from tho Jtfiddlo Park Plato frill rob that event of a good deal .of ..interest.-. 'Sir. Georgo • Clifford,, with four representatives, holds a very Btrong- haud for Saturday's race. „ T .he, Hastings light-weight jockey, K. wfhths, rode five winners at the recent Wairoti montihs. At the same meeting the Nnpier-traihed Loch Jlnbin won tho Snncipal ■ Handicap on' each day, and appy New Year scored in three events.
Jlarfcino, who will probably start favourite in tho Midsummer liandicap at Eicearton to-day, will be ridden by I{. W. King. Tho Martian maro has boon rosp"cnsiblo. for one or two smart gallops on the track during tho past week. Desires who won tho I/aunceston Cup ypsterdny, showed winning form at tho back end of his two-y«ir-old season. From tho time that the weights appeared for the Launccston and Uobart Cups, the colt was- heavily backed to win both events. Although at that time JJcsiru hud cioue nothing in public to warrant the belief that ho was a stayer, the haudicuppor came'in for some criticism for allowing the colt 191b. from tho tlirco-ycar-old (:!• Orvie.ta. After Desire has completed his Tasmanian engagements he will be shippn : | to. Victoria to fulfil his engagement in tho Newmarket Knndicap. Mr. Lan Duncan's purchases at the Elderslio sale included: Shepherdess (dnin of rtork), in foal to Charlemagne II; Ambush (dam of the Oaklcigh Tlate winner, Ueresina), in fual to Charlemagne .11; Cyro (Gyrenifin— lfiss Delaval), in foal to Doyruslurc;- Karaattan (Stfpniak—Briso),
in foal to Charlemagne II; Shawuo (St. Ambrose—Savannah), in foal to Ynren; Fireside (dam of I-'ireirnn), in foal to Charlemagne If; and also a yearling halfbrother to Odessa.
Says tho Sydney, "Arrow":—On .their past performances some of- the horses entered for the Donciister Handicap and Sydney Cup would require to bi> -tiiiled the "night before" to have any chance of success; but horses improve, rapidly at times, nnd something that may not liable to win a Park Slakes at ]>re-ent may possibly develop into u Cup horse by tho tinto that event comes off. For three full-sisters all to show win-' ning. form is a remnrkable feature in racing (says an Australian exchange), but Kueh arc Lady Medallist, Mnovilln, ami Lady Aloma, tho last-named being 'the most recent to catch the judge's eye. She won the 11.2 Handicap at Rosebo.ry, and is still eligible to take her place in the "hor.se" ranks. On the score of shnpo and movement when galloping she can well hold her own with tho two Cup winners.
An English paper has the following reference to Yellow Jack, who was quite a ohampion "second" horse in England in his day:—"He was the property of llr. Padwick, who at that period was known as.Mr. Howard. He began his tlrrce-year-old career by running second to Fazzoletto, for the Two ■ Thousand Guineas, c£221)0. He started first favourite. Ho then started first favourite for the Chester Cup, and was second to One Act. Thero were twenty-nine runners, and the race was'worth J2200. His next venture was the Derby, when he ran second to .-Ellington, this time- beating I'azzoletto, who had beaten him for the Two Thousand Guineas. There were twenty-four runners, aivd the stake was about. I'OSOO. His next journey was for the Ascot Derby, for which he ran second to I'ly by Night, worth about .£3OO. Ho was then second to Rogcrthorpo for tho Goodwood Cup, .£SOO, and he was sesond at Doncastor to Prints of .Orange for a sweepstakes of 200 guineas each, worth .£7OO. Several of the horses imported from America by Mr. Irving H. Wheatcroft have gone into training in Sydney. Kins Broomstick (by Broomstick), purchased by 'Mr. W. Christian, is undergoing a preparation under the supervision of J. Cook, aiKI.T. F. Scully has. four of the imported horses in training. W. ft. Cox, the well-known trainer, whoso death was recently reported from Melbourne, was in his younger days a prominent amateur rider, and lie will always be remembered as the pilot of Redleap in all his Grand National successes. He trained Realm, th° winner of the Australian Hurdlo Race, and the Australian and .Sydney.Cups. Cox, who was '11! years of age", leaves a widow and two children. Owing to the control exercised over bookmakers by jockey clubs, it has come to be thought that the "welsher" belongs to the lxid past, but it appears that he is still able to carry on his nefarious practices on country, racecourses (says the "Sydney Morning Heraltl"). What our Broken Hill correspondent describes as "a couple of welshing episodes" occurred on the Liarrier courses quite recently, and tho Broken Hill Racing Registration Board, as a sequel to these episodes, has adopted a scheme'under which irresponsible bookmakers may bo debarred iroin operating. An unproved guarantee of .£IOO in the gxantstand enclosure and .ESO for the Derby stand will be accepted for one day oi any cthc.- specified term of not less than three months. Where the guarantees are not forthcoming the bookmaker must deposit J'jO cash for the grandstand and £""> for the Derby stand for oft' meetings, and JUCO and i'">o respectively for holiday meetings and each day of tho July Cup meetings. The three racing clubs have agreed to these terms..
