The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, is to return to town this afternoon. Yesterday, at Napier, he ■ turned tho first sod of the Napior-Gisborne railway. His journey to Wellington to-day will be made by motor-caj.
Sir James Carroll, and the Hon. D. Buddo aro in Wellington. The Hon. T. Mackenzio is at Ternuka, the Hon. J. A. Millar at Taupo, and the Hon. A. T. Ngata at Port Awanui.
Tho Hon. D. Buddo will probably remain in Wellington until Thursday next, on which day he is to open a Coronation Hall at Masterton.
The Hon. E. M'Kenzie will probably leave Wellington to-day for Nelson.
It is announced that Mr. William S. Bonnott, who has had charge of the Wellington, New Zealand, branch of Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., since the retirement of Mr. James Macintosh in August, 1910, has now been permanently appointed to the position. The territory controlled from Wellington includes the provincial districts of Tarnnalti, Wanganui, Wellington, Marlborough, and Nelson. Mr.'Bennett joined Messrs.'Dalgety and Company's service twenty-one years ago, 'on the opening of the Rockhampton branch, Queensland. Prior to coming to New Zealand, ho wa9 for four years manager of the Townsville branch.
Mr. Arthur J. Petherick, honorary secretary of the Wellington Cruising i'aclit Club, has been presented with a memento of esteem by the members of the club on the evo of his wedding.
Mr. Percy J. Kinniburgh, who for twelve years lias represented Messrs. J. Nathan and Co. in Nelson and the West Coast, is to take up tho position of warehouse manager for the firm during tho absence of the manager on a world's tour.
Lieut.-Colonel Ramaciotti, formerly a member of the J. C. Williamson, Ltd., firm, has been gaining defence experience in a live school. Aftor putting in three weeks at Aldershot, he left for Italv, and manoeuvred for a fortnight with the Italian Army, and then did a month on the Staff at Rome. When last heard of ho was attached to the Ist Bersaglieri.
Sir John Nutting, head of the Dublin firm of 10. ajid J. Burke, bottlers of Guinnoss"s stout, is a visitor to Australia. His son, Captain Nutting, is A.D.C. to Lord Denman.
Mr. James Ashton, M.P., of Sydney, late Minister for Lands in tho Wade Government, is about to pay a holiday visit to New Zealand-
Mr. Robert Hendry, a vocalist, well known in the Hutt and Wellington, and a member of tho Hutt Bowling Club, leaves noxt week to take up his residence in Oamaru.

The Rev. Canon Alfred Richards, rector of the Cathedral Parish of Hay, New South Wales, has boon nominated to tho Anglican Bishop of Auckland for appointment as vicar of tho parish of tho Holy Sepulchre, Auckland. t The Bishop has assented to the nomination, and Canon Richards has oabled his acceptance
Mr. H. B. Irving is to be tho puost of honour at the New Zealand Club's luncheon to be hold at tho Y.M.C.A. on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Mr. j. P. Maxwell, chairman of directors of the Paparoa Coal Company, has returned from a visit to England.
The death Is reported from America of Miss Edith Crane, tho wifo of Mr. Tyrono Power, and tho creator 'of tho part of Trilby in George du Maurier's play of that name in Australia and New Zealand. She was a very fine exponent of the part (which was enated to tho Svengali of Mr. Reuben Fax), having a peculiar voice which suggested to a nicety tho tone-deafness of the character. It was in 190G that the actress first visited New Zealand, but subsequently she visited Australia with her husband, playing a round of emotional parts, none so well as Trilby. It is a coincidence that tho news of the death of Miss Crane should reach Wellington whilst the original Trilby (Miss Dorothea Baird) is in town.
Mr. J. J. Taine, Wellington's oldest pioueor, who arrived hero early in 1840 by the ship Adelaide, celebrated liis ninetyfifth birthday yesterday, when a number of friends called 011 the old gentleman to wish him joy and lons days.
