ROAD DISPUTE.

BETWEEN MAKARA AND KAEORI

A commission of inquiry into a dispute between the Karori Borough Council and the Makara County Council in regard to tho cost of maintaining the main Karori Road, the South Karori Road, Parkvale Road, and part of the Makara Road, sat yesterday at the old Parliamentary Buildings. Mr. W. S. Short, Assistant UnderSecretary for Public Works, presided as sole commissioner. Mr. A. de B. Brandon represented the Karori Borough Council, and Mr. Martin Luckie the Makara County Council. The dispute arose out of a claim by the Karori Borough Council that tho Makara County Council should bear part cost of maintaining the roads named, on tho ground that they are used by country ratepavcrs, who furnish nothing towards tho cost of their upkeep. The whole day was spent in hearing evidence, and eventualiy the borough made an offer of settlement. There seems a possibility of the parties ccmicg to an agreement and the commission was adjourned sine die, in the hopo that they may do so. Possibly it may bo necessary for Mr. Short, by virtue of his authority under the Commissioners' Powers Act, to state a case for tho Supremo -Court in regard to a legal point that has arisen.
