(Bγ Telegraph-Press Association.) Christchurch, January 27. At Riccarton this morning the plough was in capital order, and the weather was bright. Countermine beat Sea King over six furlongs in lniui. MUsec., finishing well. Oratava and Jlumura ran twelve furlongs in 2min. lTJsec, but were not extended. Colleen Mary did six furlongs in Imin. 17 2-asec. Coroniform, Buffering from a weak knee, ran seven furlongs in liuin. 33sec. Kilts beat The Cornet over six furlongs in Imin. 15 •J-ssec. Rose Noble galloped twelve furlongs in 2mLn. 15sec. Mnrtine and Sunt Ttosaloer did a mile and a half in limiii. 1.1 2-ssec. The former finished in front, but f!;>nt Ri'saleer's pcrfoniinnce was very satisfactory, and he is evidently in tine condition.' -lionny 'Olcii did seven furin lmiu. 3isec. Miss Advance did

tho same distance smartly in lmin. 30 2-ssec. A largo numben of othei- horses were given medium to fast paco work. NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Br GiENOoi.] The Takappia Jockey Club's annual meeting will' be concluded to-day. ' Acceptances for the To Kuiti Racing Club's annual meeting close on Wednesday noit. Tho Gisborne Racing Club's meeting commences on Thursday. Several trainers are now working horses at Dannovirke. Th<>v include A. ,1. Rayner with Enterprise (Kilcheran —Miru), and Comedian; It. Hocldcy with Queen of Scots, Harekcxi, and a Captain Webb maro; A. Haihawav with Donald, Rosegrove, and a Nestor—Famous colt. Crown Battery is also in work there. The contest for premier position on the flat racing , ' among the jockeys is becoming interesting. A Oliver " was a couple of points in advance of B. Deeley at the close of tho Wellington Cup meeting, but the latter oan bo relied on to make up some of the leeway at Takapuna. Oliver is going to Gisborne this week and will probably add to his account there. He is very anxious to head tho list this seabon, for although ho has ridden many winners in the past ho has never held top position. He is handicapped this season br the fact that he cannot ride much under Bst. Gib. Deeley can go to scale a stone lighter. Longnor and Gold Bird are among (he horses entered for the hurdle races at the. Dauedin Jockey Club's meeting. The fastest gallop at Riccarton on Saturday morning was that in which Kilts defeated Tho Cornet. In the Takapuna. Cup on Saturday, 'Soultoria' did not start such a strong favourite as wai anticipated. Prior to coming to Trentham, Lady Nolan Vas hurt in her box and on this account was not seen at her best at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting- It appeal's that tho chestnut filly tried to jump over the door of her box and was badly- cut o.bout the stifles. She is only a small fil'Jv, but can gallop very last and on the'Trentham tracks she finished alongside Flingot in a half-mile gallop run in 501-ssec. Though but a three-year-old, shlc ■ has already had _ several different owners. Being a half-sister to Lady Mensciikoff, her breeder sold her to Mr. W. IH. Gray, former owner of Memschikoff. The latter thought she was too small to race aud passed her on to Mr. A. Rhodes, who subsequently disposed of her. Finally Trainer T. Clark bought the Campfiro filly for 30 guineas. Negative was shipped homo to Blenheim on Friday. ' Judging' by his recent displays, the' Birkenhead gelding has lost all form. Merriyonia is reported to be coughing. If this be true, it would account Inr her lack of form at tho Trentham meeting. Glade's, recent efforts make it appear ■as if sho is not quite as good as '•ome were wont to. believe. At Trentham no excuse could be made for her for she looked bigger and stronger than ever she did before, and she got woll away in her races. When she won the Hastings Stanes in the spring, the full-sister to Formby must have been more forward than her opponents. : It is reported that Trainer G. Neich is retiring from the racing game. The. opinion seems .to bo held in some quarters that Royal Marine is not reliable, but. it would scarcely be correct to ivrite him down as such just yot. Ho is a long-striding animal that may not always be suited by the horsemen who have the mount and perhaps before the present season" closes we may yet see the Royal Artillery gelding running up to his track form. Several buyers inquired the price cf Sanguinary during the Trentham meetins but Mr. A. J. Torward would not sell the black filly. Seaweed,, who was rather badly hurt at the Dannievirko Railway Station when his trainer' was endeavouring to entrain him for Eoxton, is now undergoing a spell. ' ' ' Comedian' who is now trained at/D.annevirke,,is shortly to bo tried fdriceS , ':' At the sale of Mr. H. S. Gollan's horses in England last month, Australian Star was-sold for" 25-guineas. Tirara, by Bill of Portland from Tiraillene, the V.E.C. Oaks winner, brought 1500 guineas. Byron contracted a cold -while at Trentham, this being tho reason why he was not asied to fulfil his engagements after the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's meeting. Russo,'by Stepniak—Aileen, who won a double at the Tapanui meeting, is a fullbrother to Kremlin, Muscovite, Czar Kolohol, and Kostroma, and a brother in blood to Tsaritsa., Petrovna, Master Alix, and Rurik. Quota, another winner at Tapanui, is a member of the same family, being by Stepniak—Quickshot, who is by Artillery—lrene, full-sister to Aileen. Heatherbrae, winner of the Douro Cup at Trentham,, has been entered for tho Publicans' Handicap on the first day of the.Duncdin Jockey Club's meeting. While, The Officer gelding trained by F. Christmas was working at Riccarton this morning (says the ".News" of Saturday), he by somo means or other got off the track, and cannoned into one of the schooling hurdles, with the result that he came a nasty cropper, turning a complete somersault. His rider, Murfitt, hit the hurdle hard with his left, but fortunately he was wearing stiff ruling gaiters, and these probably saved him from having his leg broker.. The horse appeared to be none the worse for his little adventure. FIXTURES. Jan. 29—Takapuna J.C. Summer. Feb. 1 and !2 —Gisborne R.C. Summer. Feb. 1 and 3—Canterbury J.C. Summer..
