THE BAND CONTEST.
$. _ HOW WANGANUI PLATED. The "Lylteltou Times," commenting on the perlormauco of the Wauganui Garrison iiand (the winners of the championship at Christcliurcli) said:— . "Waugaiiui opened brightly and tunefully, the fiugels standing out well, whilethe trilling was good and tho soprano excellent all along. In tho 'St. John' passage the soprano maintained its excellence, although it inclined towards heaviness. The playing on the whole was faithful in detail. The opening to 'God Speed Thy Master Singing' was excellent, and tke trombone displayed beautiful ■ tone. The soprano was conspicuous for some fine sonorous tone, and was most impressive. The cornet was a trifle heavy in 'Dazzling as Dawn, , and tho D's were not always above suspicion in intonation. Tho soprano was again in evidence- with soino very fine work. The 'Tailors' Chorus' was well delineated, both detail and expression being of high order. The trombone was expressive and well supported in tho 'Dream Song,' the tone being exquisitely subdued. The succeeding ■ movements were all that could be desired, and tho band finished with a superb ending a selection that was well up to Waligauui's standard performances." Thes ame critic, writing of tho performance of the Wellington Tramways liand, said:— , , "Tho Wellington Tramways opened rather gently, but the movement was on the whole fairly good, although tho intonation began to suffer and the tempo was too slow. The style was not heavy enough in the 'God Speed' movement, until towards the end, tho closing chords being good. In tho 'Dazzling .Dawn' the cornet was heard to advantage, and the band was more tuneful, but in tho succeeding movements the quality deteriorated. The choruses were satisfactory in most respects, and the 'Dream Soiig , was expressive, though not impressive, there being some weak bars and some detail being lost. In 'Mother Eve' the euphonium was inadequate, and towards the end tho detail was faulty. The succeeding passages wero indifferently rendered."
