BEAR AND THE BEAR-FUND.

AN INTERIM REPORT. (By tho'Rev. J. Crewes, the President of the Wellington Zoological Society.) 1 On Wednesday, January 17, Mr. E. A. Wright and myself—a deputation appointed by the above society—interviewed Mr. Wirth, and wero told that ho wished the bear to be placed in tho Wellington "Zoo," and would sell it to bo placed there for .£SO. Knowing that there wore several persons who strongly desired that the boar should bo procured for the "Zoo," Mr. Wright and myself appealed to our society, the public, and the City Council to purchase the bear. The following is the result,:— Our treasurer (Mr. J. Castle) tells me that lie has received by donations to his list, amounts brought in by other collectors, and boxes in the park, .£27 12s. We are told that the Government printers are sending a contribution to our treasurer, which, with a few lists not yet closed, will, wo believe, yield <£6; and the City Council has in appreciation of the society's efforts agreed to subsidise tho'society to tho amount of £12 10s. from exchanges of animals, and other "Zoo" earnings.

, As the newspapers have kindly assisted us, free of charge, and our expenses have amounted to only the cost of a few stamps, about ,£4 in addition to the promises mentioned will enable us to meet all engagements, and we confidently ask tho public to contribute this before Monday morning.

A list is still open, and t; box for the receipt of contributions will bo near the bear's cage iu the "Zob" on Saturday and Sunday.
