R.M.S. TAIKTJI ARRIVES. Tainui, R.M.S., of the Shaw, fiavill, and Albion Company's fleet, arrived in the stream at Wellington from London, via way ports, at i.lO p.m. yesterday, and lierthed at the Queen's Wharf No. 1 south at 5 p.m. A report of the voyage, supplied by the purser (Mr. Ij. J. Wahlers). stated that the Tainui left London on December 7, and Plymouth on December. 9, with. 25 first, 76 second, and 466 third-class paEEengers for various ports in ?lew Zealand. After leaving Plymouth, the vessel encountered a fierce south-west gale, the sea at times beins mountainous.' One lady ■ in the third-class was unfortunately knocked down by a sea which • came on board at this time, and was rather badly hurt. She had. however, almost recovered from the ?fTccts of the accident on arrival. Tencrlffc was reached on the morning of December 15, departure being taken on the following day. It is understood that the inquiry exonerated Captain Walter and his officers from all blame, the accident being attributed to a. very strong current which had carried the vessel out of her course. Captain A. T. Norton, late of the Flora, has been, appointed to the command of the Wanaka, vice Captain Todd, who is transferring to tho Talune. Mr. A. Smith, late of the Tarawera, joined the Kamona yesterday as third engineer, vice Mr. T. P. Scannon. Mr. S. Bsrncch, late of the Duchess, has relieved Mr. Baillio as second engineer of tho Ripple. Mr. C. Broadloy. third engineer of the Jgahsre, has rejoined the vessel, and Mr. >T. Ryan, who has been relieving him, has come ashore. Mr. F. Smith joined the Moeraki at Sydney this trip, taking the. place of Mr. Dowling, late acting-third officer, who transfers to th 3 Rakanoa. Mr. T. M. James, late of the Glen Lino of steamers, is now fourth officer of tho Tainni, vice Mr. Gordon, who joined tho Waiwera as third, at London. It is expected that the Shaw-BaTill steamer Delphic will be dispatched from Aucktand for London, Tia Monte Video . and Tenenffs, on February 6. Kairaki, s.s., is not expected at Wellington until to-day. She returns to Kaiapoi with shsep this evening. On January 30 tho Tysor liner Star of Canada will ho dispatched from Wellington for London. At an early hour yesterday morning the Jew Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Otalu left Wellington for Beauty Point. The Hamburg-America Steamship Company Ims declared a dividend of 9 per cent. The F.-11.-S. steamer Drayton Grange has been fixed to take the February loading berth in New Zealand for Avonmouth. Her sailing dote will be February 24. She is due at Wellington for Home loading on February 15. The TJnion steamer Taviuni is expect'd here from Newcastle to-day. The 'Koluku is expected in port from Westport to-day. She leaves on the return trip on Saturday, and loads coal at Westport and Greymouth for Onehunga. Owing to heavy sen on the Grey River bar it was anticipated that the Waiporl would not clear that port for Wellington yesterday. Messrs. Johnston and Co. advise that the stoamer Moa left Wanganui for Westport at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The vessel should arrive at her destination this afternoon. Telegraphic advice received from Kaipara states that the locally-owned scow Ngaru left there for Wellington at 5 p.m. yesterday. The Government training ship Amokura. It" Wellington for the Kermadces la>t evening, and cleared the Heads at 7.15 p.m.
