MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Dr. M'Arthttr, S.M.) "MB. GREIG." TRESPASSERS FRUSTRATED. George Gardiner pleaded guilty to a charge that ho had been found by night without lawful excuse on the promises of the Windsor Hotel. The circumstances detailed by Sub-In-spector Shechan v;ere to tho effect that Gardiner and another man were found on one of the to]) floors of the Windsor Hotel endeavouring to get into a room. When accosted, Gardiner stated that ho TCas looking for a Mr. Greig, who had arrived by tho steamer from Nelson, and who occupied room 63. Inquiries were made, and it was found that there was no Mr. Greig on the premises, and also that the steamer did nut arrive from Nelson until an hour later. The intruder ran away, but jMr. Hardcastle, proprietor of the hotel, caught him and handed him over to tho, police. The police stated that nothing was known of Gardiner's past, but that inquiries could be made if a remand were granted. Gardiner was remanded till to-day for sentence. POEIEUA AFFAIR. James Sonth, alias James Reynolds, was charged with assaulting Edward Brown, at I'orirua, on November 13. Sub-Inspector Shoehan said that on the day in question there had been a general outburst of drinking. The accused was a powerful man, wjio was fond of drink, and was very violent when dmnk. He had assaulted others besides Brown. South was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. INSOBRIETY. For insobriety, James Bakor was fined 10s.
