A magisterial inquiry was held to-day into the circumstances of the fire in John Edmonds's store on the evening of New Year's Day,'which destroyed or damaged j;C000 to X'7ooo worth of ironmonger s stock. An open verdict was returned. The only evidence that had a direct bearing on the question of the Origin of the fire was that of IT. G. Keith, a traveller for the firm, and Hayes, a shop assistant, who were in about half an hour before the fire was discovered. They both noticed on entering a slight smell as of smouldering fire.
