FOR THE PROVINCE. THIv PROGRESS OF Till; PLAY. The Wellington provincial handicap aud championship tournament was continued at Day's Bay yesterday, (be weather being favourable to good play. Tho courts were in capital order, and the general arrangements good. Towards evening a slight shower of ruin fell, and play was discontinued. The finals in three events will have to bo played on Saturday afternoon. These events are the men's championship singles, between ■Swauston iind Peacock, the combined championship doubles, between Miss Travers and Fisher and Miss Williams and, Salmond. and the ladies' handicap doubles, between Misses Williams and Halliam and Misses Van Staveren and Davis.

The filial of (ho Indirs" champion singles, which was played off yesterday, betwpon Misses Travers aud Williams, prorided an cseiHiifj and very even contest. Some splendid rallies look place. Miss Williams doing most of the attacking, but her opponent was too safe for her, and managed to come home with the, barn margin of two games in each set. Miss Davis and Crowes played well to reach the final of the combined handicap doubles, but Miss Urewster and Brown were too strong for them. lirown played very accurately, and was well backed up by his partner. Miss Curtis put up a splendid performance in working off a largo handicap against Miss Kigg, and in beating Miss M'lntosh in the iiual, although, at one time, that lady led by 19-45. Some good games were seen in the men's handicap singles, J'arker, Curtis, and Crewes playing very well. Sampson beat Curtis in the final. In the final of the men's handicap doubles, Brown and Hawkins accomplished quite a marvellous feat in defeating Hobertson and Taylor, after having to work off a handicap of 42 points. Brown was in the best of form, and made few mistakes. Ladies' Champion Singles. (Present champion: Miss K. M. Kunneley.)
