BATHERS AND SHARKS.

(By Telecrapb.—Snecial Correspondent.! i Auckland, January 22. i Bathers at Shelly Beach yesterday wore • rudely disturbed by the sudden appoar- . mice of three sharks. A number of persons i were in keen enjoyment of the delights of ' a dip in the briny, when the intruders ! made their appearance. The elfeot was 1 electrical; and a scene of wild confusion , took place as the bathers raced for the ' slioto. No timekeeper was present l<> i-e----eord the time token in reaching the shore, 1 but from unofficial sources it is computed i that all records were easily broken, 1>?1 sides which many novelty strokes in the I- art of swimming were introduced. The ' three sharks enmo close into the shallow ' water and could lie easily distinguished, i Ono of them was estimated to be about ! ten, feet long. Their appearance created • such a stir that bathing wad not a popular pastime for the rest of tlio day, bathers preferring to watch the finny monsters from the security of the beach.
