LAWN TENNIS.

THE PROVINCE CHAMPIONSHIPS^ CO.VrfENt'ED AT THE BAY. The thirteenth provincial championship and handicap tournament was commenced at Day's Bay on Saturday. The weather was boisterous, and militated against really good play. A sharp shower of rain fell in the morning, but the . weather cleared in the afternoon, and a large number of games were decided. Two notable absentees were G. Ullivier, of Christchurch, the present holder 1 of the New Zealand championship, and Miss I\ A. Stewart, the brilliant Sydnoyienne. It is hoped, however, that ' Mi>"s Steward will compete to-day. The championship play so far has been more or lo.?s one-sided, as some ','wecd- > ing out" is always required before tho more exciting matches lake place. 11l the Moil's Championship Singles l-\ A. • do la Mare won from E. .1. Simpson, after • a good eonte.st, for Simpson played up strongly in tho second set. F. M, B. Fisher and L. \V. Hawkins had an even match. The latter played well, leading in the first set G—s, -1-o—ls, and, in tho second, 3 love. Fisher, however, proved too clover, and eventually recovered well, while Parsons, niter .defeating Beere, was in good form in his match -against Fisher, taking tho second set B—6, and . tho remainder of the play being practically equal. W, E. Crowes opened well against 11. Brown, but as the match progressed experience told in the latter'* favour. In tho Men's Championship Doubles Crewos and Fathers played pluckily against Peacock and Gore, but naturally tho senior players carried rather i;oo many guns for them. Peacock and Gore are a good double, and should reach tho ■ final. Gore at times showed very strong play. Swanston and Salmond were too much for Cowan and Wellwood, Sahnond proving remarkably steady. Brown and Hawkins met Fell and Putnam, and got through with casts only losing two games. Cleghorn and Parker gave these two some trouble, the younger pair playing really well, and, if Parker . . proved steadier, the score might easily _ _ have been reversed, lislier and \\hite Parsons nro another strong double, and, to-day, they meet the winners of the lJrown-Haukins and Swan-ston-Salmond match. . In tho Jadies' championship doubles, Messrs. Williams and Nuuneley were too good for Misses Van Stavcren and Davis, > although tho latter pair played some really good shots. Quite tho most interesting match in this grade was that between Misses Curtis and Bennett and Misses Simpson and Brewster. .Miss Curtis plaved with great accuracy at the net, and, witli her partner's aid, made a really good stand.
