MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.). Masterton, January 18. A' large number of Jlastertoninus proceeded to Newman to-day by special train to participate in the annual Roman Catholic picnic which is being held on the Newman Domain. Visitors from all parts of Ihu I'orty-m'ilo Hush arc expected to be present. An alarm of firo was sounded this morning. The cause was an incipient blaze resulting from a Ciiso of phosphorous at a chemists establishment having ignited. The Kev. 'JVC!. Butler, of Mangatoroto, will supply lhe_ pulpit of the Congregational Church in Masterton for three months, after the departure for Napier of the Rev. A. Hodge. Mi: Hodge is to be entertained at a social gathering and public send-off. The Masterton Borough Council has decided to invite the Minister for Internal Affairs- to bo present, at the opening of the new Coronation Hall in the- pubLic park on I'ebniary 1. At a meeting of tho Evangelical Council last night, the K«v. A. Hodge, who tendered his resignation as president, was thanked for his past services, and regret wa.s expressed at. his departure. The itev. A. T, Thompson was elected president in hi.s stead. A live-roomed unoccupied house on the Matahiwi Kstatc—a few miles from Masterfon—was destroyed by fire an eveninj) or two ago. The building was insured for ,£125 in tho London, Liverpool, and Globe Olfice. A young man named — Stewart fell from*a scaffolding a few days back and was somewhat severely injured.
