CONQUEST BY ROUGH LABOUR.
♦ — TUBLIC TO PAT. (By Telecraph--Pres6 Association.) Dunedin, January 18. The "Star" estimates, as an outcome of the Shipping Conference, that payments to workers by shipowners will represent an annual expenditure equal to ,£150,000. In addition to the advances granted in the wharf labourers' wages, cooks and .stewards, and members of the Merchants' Service Guild also receive advances. The shipowners ami the Seamen's Union arc now engaged settling what increases are to bo given to firemen and seamen. It is rumoured that oversea shipowners arc already taking steps to increase inward freight rates by a ijj per ten.
