MID-WEEK CRICKET.

« BOISTEROUS DAY. THE FIFTH SERIES BEGUN. Drenched with the rain which swept over the Basin Reserve yesterday, the cricketers were obliged to draw stumps at ii.s-1, and play terminated for tho day. A. boisterous "old man northerly" also blew across the ground, and some of tho bowlers, usually known as "plain straight men," developed rather wonderful and quite unexpected swerves. It was, en the whole, a bowler's day. Chief batting honours fell to Rivals, who kept Vivian in the field all the afternoon. Davis, M'Kenzie, and George proving difficult men to dislodge. T'ost and Telegraph shaped fairly against Union, knocking up 133. but this was largely the work of two uien. The meeting of Oriental and Artillery produced an interesting match, and, as the scores stand, the former seem to have somo chance. A feature in this"game was tho bowling of Ryan, who got quite a lot of work on deliveries, which were also fairly fast. On account of a holiday occurring on Monday, the mid-week matches will not be continued until the following week. UNION AND P. AND T. P. and T.—First Innings. Sclater, c. M'Gill, b.
