• ■ SAN FRANCISCO MAILS. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! Auckland, January 17. The San Francisco correspondent of the "Herald," writing under date December 25, says:—As the result of an interview a few days ago between the representative of the Oceanic Steamship Company of San Francisco and President Taft, it is announced that the United States Government will pay a mail subsidy .of two dollars (S.s. 4d.) " a mile to an American lino of steamers carrying mails from Ran Francisco to New Zealand and Australia, calling also at Honolulu and Pago Pago, the American port at Samoa. This practically ensures the re-establish-ment of the Oceanic or Sprockols service between San Francisco, Auckland, and Sydnev. in accordance with tho plans announced some months ago, under which the Ventura and Sonoma will bo refitted as oil-burners. The subsidv is under an Act passed 20 years ago. 'Tho more, recent agitations for a ship subsidy which have been uniformly unsuccessful were for aid to American ships in excess of two dollars a mile.
