BANK-BOOK FORGERY CHARGE.
COMPLETE DENIAL. * William Frederick Jones was charged with forging (he name of I, Jacobus to a l'cst Office Savings Bank withdrawal receipt. The amount inserted on the withdrawal slip was JS.. Francis Taylor Bennington, clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank, gave evidence that, n't three minutes to four on December 29, Jones presented a book belonging b I. Jacobus at the counter, and received n .withdrawal slip which he filled in tor &>, signed (he slip as "I. Jacobus," and presented it tor payment. Witness, as is usual, compared the signature in the book with that on the slip, and found a great discrepancy in them. He ■ showed the signatures lo Mr. I'avitt, a lollow-worker, and then (o the accountant. He told the man who presented I he book that ho was not Jacobus, and the man declared Ihat'he was. Then witness went lor a policeman, but, when he returned with one. the man luid disappeared. Kenneth Maurice I'avitt, clerk in the Money Order branch of the Telegraph Department, said that lie had been shown the diserepiney in the signatures, had looked at the man, and had remarked to him that the book presented was not his. Some weeks later witness was called lo identify accused among a number of others, nnd picked him out. Questioned by Jones, the witness admil led that lie went there to look for a dark, (dean-shaven, fairly tall man of about 21 years, and that' the only other clean-shaven man there was a short, stout, fair man. It was not correct that he look his cue fiom Detective Andrews as lo which man to select. " Isidore Jack Jacobus tailor, of IB") Willis Street, stated that the bank book produced wa.s his. He had known Jones for about three years. Jones stayed at his place on the night of December 28, and was there on December 2!l. Jones asked for a loan of about ."is, but witness had no change and gave him his bankbook to get a loan on. Very likely ,loncs thought that hn had a right lo go. and cot money from the, bank. Jones pleaded not guilty and was com. milted for trial. Hail was allowed, and Jacobus immediately offered l« stand surety. OTHER CASES. John Edward Lisher, alias Ramsay, admitted stealing a bicycle belonging to Robert Douglas Christie. He was remanded for sentence. Annie Hand Sales and Minnie Brawn were s-cntenml to three months for being idle, disorderly, and without; sufficient lawtitl means of support, John Ward was! sentenced to three months' imprisonment for committing an improper act. John Ramsay Lishor was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment for insobriety. ! Stanley Sullivan was adjudged father of an illegitimate child, which he was ordered to support, and he was required to enter into a bond that the ordei' would be complied with. CIVIL CASE. In the case in which Armio Parkinson, of Willis Street, nurse, claimed from George Kennedy, of tho Government Life Insurance ofibe, Wellington, a sum uf JJ9 95., judgment was given, for the defendant. Mr. T. W. Hislop represented the plaintiff, and Mr. A. Gray the defendant.
