| , ■ THE RECENT RAILWAY AFFAIR, . (From Our Special Correspondent.) : Palmcrston, January 17. At a meeting of the Palmcrston Swimi ming Club last overiing, -the following officers were elected:—President, Mr. W. Devine; treasurer, Mr. C. Robert; committee, Messrs. P. Robbie, K. Hulbort, R. Dickenson, W. G. Harwood, A. Morrison, and the other officers ex officio, who wcro elected at a previous meeting. The Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, tho Muyor presiding. The Town Clerk reported that , street-sweeping cost the borough ,£292 per annum, the revenue from sale of manure amounting to X 32, leaving a debit on this account of ,£260. . Councillor Nathan brought up the question of boys l)eing allowed in billiard rooms, and, after discussion, it was decided to ascertain what by-laws were in forco in other towns prior to taking action in the matter. Tho recent railway accident in tho Square ■ came in for a good deal of discussion, and the inertness of tho Department in not providing electric bells, as promised long ago, or stationing men at tho level crossings at the Square, came in for criticism. It was decided (o appoint the Mayor and Councillors Haydon and Nathan to wait on tho Minister with a view to ascertaining if something could not bo done to minimise the risk to lifo and limb at dangerous crossings. Two, applications wcro received to lease the Opera House, which has not been a paying proposition to the council of late. The applications were not considered, but it was decided to call for applications for tho lease of tho building. These applications are to bo called both in Australia and New Zealand. Tho council also hold a special meeting to fix tho half-holiday, and it was decided to observe it as usual on Wednesday afternoons. A severe accident happened on Monday to a bny named Coley, son of Mr. G. Coloy, llaxmiller, of Foxton. The lad was riding into Foxton, and, in crossing the railway line at tho racecourse, the hor.'o stumbled and fell on him. On being picked up by a passer-by, it was discovered that his leg was broken, and he was conveyed to Foxton. whore he received medicul attention. The horse had to be destroyed. An enlarged photograph of Mr. L. G. West, a former Mayor of Palmcrston, lias been hung in the Council Chambers, thus making, a complete set of photographs of nil Mayors of the town. Great alterations and additions have been made to tho Himitaniji railway station on the Foxton line. Tho goods shed has been moved to a more convenient, position, and a now loading bank erected, while the cattle yards have been increased, and tho loading conveniences improved, and the station brought generally up-to-date, so as to be in keeping with .tho increased importance of the district. Tho stock sales at this centre have increased of late, and new saleyards have been erected. It is reported that a large estate in the Oroua Downs district will bo cut up for close settlement by privato enterprise, within the next twelve months. Tho oat crops in the ITimilangi district arc said to be light, but very clean.
