SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS.
THE POSITION IX XOKTII CAXTEJo: Bt'liV. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Chrislchurch, January 17. : The shortage of teachers is becoming serious in North Canterbury. In a report presented to-day by the Appointments Committee of the Education Board it was slated that in view of the shortage in the supply of teachers evidenced bv the fact that existing vacancies would alisorb ail students who had left tho Training College, it had been agreed to again impre.-.s upon tho Department tho necessity of appointing an additional number of probationer.-. With irgard to the Department's statement that any deficiency might be met by falling back upon Class B students, who are n.iw practically shut out of training colleges for Jack of vii3Aneie<, it had been agreed to jKiiit, out that no applicant under Division B had been refused admission in Chrislchurch on such grounds. The secretary reported that, owing mainly to' the substituting of assistant mistresses in several schools, and to the incrcaso in attendance, there were approximately 23 s vacancies for assistant mistresses to bo advertised. In order to minimise the inconvenience that would bo /ecasioned by advertising so larga a number at one time, it was agreed to call immediately for 'applications for half the number, the remaining vacancies to be advertised later.
