» SUMMARY AND FORECAST. Present indications are for somewhat boisterous conditions, especially in and southwards of Cook Straits, with rain and cloudy weather generally, and electrical disturbances in parts. High westerly wind 3 prevailing, veering to southerly, in about 16 hours, with colder conditions generally, and snow on the higher levels in the south. The glass is due to rise then. Barometric pressure has decreased everywhere with the approach of a westerly low pressure area, and heavy rain lias fallen on the West Coast of the South Island, causing floods in' the rivers. . Unsettled conditions have obtained elsewhere, with showers in parts, and high northerly and westerly winds generally. B. V. PEMBERTON. Meteorological Office. Wellington, January 18, 1912. Palmerston, January 17.—Light rain commenced to fall betweu 7 and 8 o'clock this morning, but did not last long. A heavy wind has been blowing most of the day. ' Otaki, January 17.—Fine, but windy. Feathcrston, January 17.-overcast during the morning; afternoon fine, with strong N.W. wind. Hastings, January 17.—T0-day has furnished tho hottest day of tho season, the thermometer registering 86deg. in the shade.
