MAN.UEA REPLACES MAITAI. IN TIIE 'FRISCO SERVICE. Advices received by the local branch of the Union Company.. yesterday staled that it had been dccided to rcplace the Maiiai in the Sydney-San Francisco scrvice by the Manuka, commencing ou March 29. Tiio Maitai (now on iier way up to San Francisco from Wellington), is scheduled to lcavos San Francisco for Wellington and Sydney on February 7, and on arrival at tho'New South Wales port on March 5 she will withdraw. When seen yesterday concerning the future of tile .Maitai, - Mr. C. Holdsworth, general manager of the Union Company, stated', that'it had .not.:becn dccidcd what was-to be done in regard to tho.steamer. A rumour, which has been in circulation for some time past, is ' to the effect that- the Warrimoo was to be employed in the East Coast service, but this report lacks 1 confirmation, for it has been officially stated that-she is to.be employed as a -relieving vaasel.- The Warrimoo is to be relieved in the intercolonial service by tho new steamer Maunganui next month. Regarding the respective tonnages of the Manuka and Maitai, it is interesting to note that the former has a registered tonnage of 4505, and tho latter one of 3393. It will thus been seen that tho Union Company are alive to tho fact that larger vessels are required for this service. - Quite recently they placed the fine new steamer Tahiti, 7585 tons, in the running, and she is now on her maiden trip down from 'Frisco, being due at Wellington on February 6. Now tlie Maitai is to ho replaced by the favourite intercolonial liner Manuka. The next vessel to be relieved in the service is the old Aorangi, and no doubt ns time goes on she will be replaced by a better class of ship. When all -these alterations take place, tho Syd-ney-Wellington-San Francisco , service will be a very,,efficient.one,- ! " MOANA AitRIVE&AT 6 A.M. ! By wireless last evening the iloana advised that it was cxpccted to reach Wellington from Sydney at 6 a.m. to-day. The vessel will berth at the Quecn'3 Wharf No. 6. i HDUTANGI AT LYTTELTON. Ati arrival at Lyttelton from tho Chatham Islands at 6 p.m. yesterday was the Chatham Islands Fishing Company's steamer Ilimilangi. She leaves for the Chat* hams again at 5 p.m. to-morrow.
