Thp shipping companies and employers of wharf labour have filed a. dispute under the Arbitration Act, and January 30 has been fixed as the date of hflaring* •The position is peculiar. Tlio "local branch of the Waterside Workers' Union recently took a vote, with a view to the cancellation of registration, and carried a proposal. by .1 considerable majority; but when the matter caino l>efore the.Registrar he refused to cancel the registration on the ground that the majority was not a majority of the (ota.l members of the union. The employers ask for various mollifications of the existing award, including<exclusdon of the preference clause. A meeting of waterside workers was held last evening to consider matters connected with the present dispute. The mooting was not open to the pVess, but the nscretary, seen by a reporter, said: "Thero is nothing to make public, but the position is serious."
