Reinhardt's production of Mr. Gilbert Murray's translation of "Oedipus" was a success at C'ovent Garden. It was remarkable for its soenic and crowd effects. Mr. Martin Harvey took the part of "Oedipus" and Miss Lillah M'Carthy that of Jocasta. Max Reinhardt, the eminent German producer, has made just as impressive a. sensation in London as in Germanj, where he is regarded as a genius in tho original ideas lie has on stage management. About a year ago he staged "Oedipus" at the Circus in Berlin, and succeeded by tho arrangement of his stage crowds and the effects he was able to get by judicious lighting in creating a sensation in the artistic world. One striking picture of a stage effect he got in "Oedipus" was recently produced im an illustrated paper. It was that of a huge crowd of a thousand people with upturned faces and arms outstretched towards an orator. By a play of lights he managed to throw the protagonist into bold relief, and at the same time to U T luminate the faces and bare arms of the great multitude, whilst tho rest of the scene was in utter darkness. Reinhardt is the producer who is reported to have staged "The Miracle" at the Coliseum, London, at Christmas, with such brilliant success.
